Swoon aka Caledonia Dance Curry
Renowned for her delicate paste ups and large scale installation work, New York artist, Swoon, recently made a trip to Melbourne for her first Australian exhibition, Thekla, at the Metro Gallery in Armadale.
The petite artist was run off her feet when we visited her in the gallery, but she managed to sit down with us to chat about her upbringing, her artistic process and future projects.
In this nice little film by ACCLAIM lads, Louis Mitchell and Michael Danischewski, she spoke extensively about space, context and participation and how these inspire and impact her work.

“Escape Machine”
DDB Paris created this simple, fun “Escape Machine” experience for the French travel company Voyages SNCF.
Menacing, glowing black cubes wait till someone goes close enough. Then the cube asks where the person would like to travel. Pushing the red button produces a crazy celebration, complete with gigantic walking kisses, and provides the wishers large, customized mock tickets to their destination.

Street Alphabet Competition
Street Fonts
Graffiti Alphabets from Around the World
Claudia 'MadC' Walde has spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from 30 countries.
All of the artists in the book have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa) and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or starting to get reputations.
Each artist received the same brief: to design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them.
This highly original book will inspire fans of street culture as well as typographers, graphic designers, advertising and communication students and design professionals worldwide.

Helle Rohde | Precise Papers
Precise Papers
by Helle Rohde Andersen
The Precise is an underlying and omnipresent property of computers and machines. Precise Papers is a tangible representation of an algorithmic and generative exploration of The Precise, enabling a material experience of the precision of machines.
160 ellipses has been cut out of 160 pieces of paper, creating a perfectly precise, growing and moving organic shape when the papers are stacked.
The shape has been drawn in Processing and cut out with a laser cutter, creating a degree of precision impossible to replicate by manual human labour.

Aerodynamic SmartBird fight model by Festo
SmartBird is an ultralight but powerful flight model with excellent aerodynamic qualities and extreme agility. With SmartBird, Festo has succeeded in deciphering the flight of birds - one of the oldest dreams of humankind.
This bionic technology-bearer, which is inspired by the herring gull, can start, fly and land autonomously -- with no additional drive mechanism. Its wings not only beat up and down, but also twist at specific angles. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit, which in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. Festo has thus succeeded for the first time in creating an energy-efficient technical adaptation of this model from nature.

V35K18 | Pasel Kuenzel Architects
'V35K18' Rotterdam studio Pasel Kuenzel Architects
One of eleven private houses of pasel.künzel architects on a former industrial site located in the historical city centre of Leiden.
The various functions of the house are stacked in a classic manner: from working on the ground floor to living on the Bel-Etage to sleeping on the upper floor.
By means of a triple floor height void, comprising a sensational cascade stairway, all functions are connected in a vertical way.
This ‘gap’ is rather an urban void than part of the inner circulation space of the residence. Changing floors means meandering through the city.

Filo Sofa
by BarberOsgerby
Manufacturer - Cappellini
Materials - Oak frame with upholstered quilts
The utilitarian, internal structure of a sofa is usually hidden from view and is therefore designed to support rather than to look attractive.
In contrast, the exposed framework of the Filo Sofa is handcrafted from solid oak, by skilled cabinetmakers.
Rather than being used as a skin for the structure, upholstery has been used in the form of layered quilts to provide comfort.
The quilts can be alternated to give variable colour combinations.
